How long does a domain transfer take?
That depends on the extension: from a few hours to a few days. After your confirmation the transfer is usually completed within 24 hours.
Do I have to wait until my domain name expires?
No, you can transfer at any time. Waiting until the expiry date is actually riskier.
Can I take over a domain name from someone else?
Yes, if the current owner agrees and gives you the transfer code. Any fee is something you arrange with the owner yourself.
